Job hunting in Nigeria remains tough in 2026, and scammers know it. Every year, thousands of people lose money, sometimes hundreds of thousands of Naira, to fake job offers that never existed. The most dangerous scams follow the same patterns year after year, but they get more convincing with better websites, WhatsApp groups, and fake verification tricks.
Here are the five most common and costly recruitment scams still active right now, with clear signs to spot them and practical ways to stay safe.
1. “Pay for Application / Processing / Invitation Letter” Schemes
This is still the number one scam in Nigeria. Someone contacts you (usually via WhatsApp or email) claiming you have been shortlisted or selected for a federal government job (NNPC, CBN, NPA, NIMC, Customs, Immigration, etc.). They then demand payment for:
- Application form
- Processing/verification fee
- Medical / background check
- Uniform / ID card
- Training/induction fee
Red flags
- Any demand for money before you see an official letter of appointment
- Payment requested to personal Opay, Palmpay, Moniepoint, or crypto wallets
- Urgency (“pay within 24 hours or lose the slot”)
- No official portal or email from the real organisation
Real fact: All genuine federal government recruitments are free at the application stage. The FCSC, OHCSF, NPF, NNPC, CBN, and every MDA have repeatedly stated since 2018 that they never ask candidates for money during recruitment.
2. Fake Recruitment Portals & Cloned Websites
Scammers create look-alike websites that copy the real design of fcsc.gov.ng, nnpcgroup.com, npa.gov.ng, or recruitment.fedcivilservice.gov.ng. They use similar domain names (fcsc-recruitment.ng, nnpc-career.com, fudma-recruit.ng) and ask for registration fees or “profile upgrade” payments.
Red flags
- Domain is not the official one (always check the real website first)
- Poor grammar, broken layout, or missing security padlock (https)
- Immediate request for payment after “registration.”
- No physical address or verifiable contact phone on the site
How to stay safe
Always type the official URL yourself (never click links from WhatsApp or email). Bookmark the real portals: fcsc.gov.ng, ohcsf.gov.ng, nnpcgroup.com/careers, npa.gov.ng/careers.
3. “Already Shortlisted / Recommended” Messages from Unknown Numbers
You receive a message or call saying: “Congratulations, your name is on the shortlist / recommended list for NNPC / Customs / CBN. Send ₦15,000–₦50,000 to secure your slot.” Often accompanied by a fake list in PDF with real names mixed with yours.
Red flags
- The message comes from a personal WhatsApp number, not an official domain email
- Sender refuses to provide a verifiable staff ID or official letterhead
- They pressure you to pay before seeing any official document
Real fact: Shortlists are only published on official portals or through formal letters. No legitimate agency asks for money to “secure” a place already offered.
4. Fake Job / Training / Induction Letters Demanding Payment
Scammers send beautifully formatted “appointment letters” or “invitation to training” PDFs, asking for money for:
- Uniform
- Medicals
- Flight / transport to induction centre
- Laptop / tablet
Red flags
- The letter asks for payment to an individual account instead of an official Remita or Remita-linked account
- No official reference number or signature from a named director
- The induction/training venue is a random hotel instead of the agency headquarters
Real fact: Genuine induction letters never ask for money. All costs are borne by the employer.
5. “Agent / Insider Connection” Schemes
Someone claims to have a connection inside NNPC, CBN, Customs, or OHCSF and can “push” your name for ₦150,000–₦500,000. They often show fake screenshots of “shortlisted names” with yours already added.
Red flags
- Payment requested via Opay, Palmpay, crypto, or personal bank account
- Promise of “guaranteed employment.”
- Refusal to provide a verifiable staff ID or official communication
Real fact: No individual can “push” your name in genuine federal recruitment. The process is centralised, audited, and quota-based.
