Role: Drill Rig Technician at HMD Nigeria

  • Location: Lagos, Nigeria
  • Employment: Full-time
  • Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor / Field Service Lead
  • Job Field: Engineering / Technical (Oil & Gas, Mining, Construction)

As a Drill Rig Technician, you’ll perform both field and workshop-based maintenance, ensuring drilling equipment operates safely and effectively across client sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute risk assessments and apply SOPs during every repair, service, and maintenance job—on-site or in the workshop
  • Correct mechanical and hydraulic faults on rigs: powertrains, fuel, brake, steering, and hydraulic systems
  • Prevent downtime by conducting scheduled preventive maintenance and diagnosing early-stage equipment issues
  • Keep precise field/service reports, ensuring they’re signed by site representatives
  • Maintain tools and equipment inventory; ensure proper signing and upkeep
  • Enforce HSE standards at all times, reporting potential hazards promptly
  • Handle company vehicles and ensure they remain in serviceable condition
  • Support after-sales operations and liaise with clients and technical teams
  • Aid maintenance managers with testing, troubleshooting, and technical demonstrations
  • Provide warranty support, submit service logs, and escalate technical issues

Required Qualifications & Experience

To be eligible for this role, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Educational Background:

  • Minimum of HND or Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Automobile Engineering
    • Industrial Maintenance
    • Mechatronics or a related technical field

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 4 years hands-on experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing:
    • Drill rigs
    • Earth-moving equipment
    • Oilfield or mining machinery
  • Proven ability to diagnose hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical faults on-site and in workshop environments
  • Field experience in preventive maintenance, component replacement, and technical reporting
  • Prior work with OEM service tools and diagnostic software is an added advantage

Technical & Digital Skills:

  • Familiar with hydraulic systems, brake/steering systems, fuel systems, and powertrains
  • Proficiency in technical report writing, digital service logs, and use of tools like Google Workspace
  • Capable of interpreting technical manuals, service bulletins, and engineering drawings

Additional Competencies:

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to work under pressure
  • French language proficiency is a bonus (for regional West African deployments)
  • Ability to travel and work across multiple sites

Job Location

Lagos, Nigeria
You’ll operate across client drilling sites in the Niger Delta and workshops in Lagos. Flexibility for regional travel is essential.
