Job Title: Operations and Maintenance Engineer

Location: Abuja, Nigeria
Employment Type: Full-time
Reports To: O&M Manager / Technical Operations Lead
Industry: Renewable Energy / Engineering / Power

This is a field and office-based role with responsibilities spread across solar plant maintenance, troubleshooting, remote monitoring, and client support.

Key Responsibilities

As an Operations and Maintenance Engineer, you will be responsible for:

Daily & Preventive Maintenance:

  • Conducting routine inspections and preventive maintenance at multiple solar PV sites
  • Executing weekly and monthly servicing schedules on inverters, batteries, PV modules, and combiner boxes
  • Updating asset logs and ensuring maintenance documentation is accurate and complete

Fault Detection & Resolution:

  • Remotely monitor site performance using tools like AMMP, ELUM, or SCADA dashboards
  • Analyze fault codes, performance anomalies, and dispatch technicians to resolve technical issues
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and restore system performance with minimal downtime

Client Relationship & Site Coordination:

  • Coordinate directly with client facility teams for site access, planned outages, or escalations
  • Provide support during technical site visits, performance reviews, and audits
  • Prepare maintenance reports and communicate site status to project managers and the operations team

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Maintain real-time records of faults, energy generation, availability, and system health
  • Submit daily, weekly, and monthly reports to the O&M Manager and Technical Lead
  • Track O&M inventory such as tools, spare parts, and personal protective equipment (PPE)

Support During Commissioning & Upgrades:

  • Assist in system commissioning: inverter configuration, battery calibration, safety tests
  • Implement firmware updates and software patching for inverter or monitoring systems
  • Offer on-site technical support during system expansions or retrofits

Compliance & Safety:

  • Enforce safety protocols and ensure all on-site work follows OEM and NEC/IEC standards
  • Adhere to Westa.solar’s internal HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) guidelines

Required Qualifications & Experience

To qualify for this position, applicants must have:

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree or HND in any of the following:
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Renewable Energy Engineering
    • Mechatronics or Instrumentation Engineering

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2–4 years working with power systems, solar energy, or electrical installations
  • Experience with off-grid, hybrid, or grid-tied solar systems
  • Knowledge of lithium and lead-acid battery systems, charge controllers, and string inverters

Technical Skills:

  • Hands-on ability to troubleshoot inverters (e.g. SMA, Huawei, Victron, Fronius)
  • Comfortable using performance monitoring platforms (AMMP, ELUM, Sunny Portal)
  • Understanding of solar wiring, panel configurations, grounding systems, and BOS components
  • Ability to read and interpret SLDs (single-line diagrams), schematic drawings, and load profiles

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to technical excellence
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Must be able to work under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Willingness to travel to project sites across Nigeria
  • Physically fit and able to work in outdoor conditions
  • High level of integrity, ownership, and safety consciousness
